The facts

On July 17, 2026, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals ruled New Jersey's ban on AR-15s and magazines holding more than 10 rounds unconstitutional.

New Jersey first banned assault-style firearms in 1990, and expanded the law in 2018 to cap magazines at 10 rounds.

The AR-15 platform is the best-selling rifle in America, with the NSSF estimating more than 24 million in civilian hands as of 2022.

In the 2022 Bruen decision, the Supreme Court ruled gun regulations must be consistent with the nation's historical tradition of firearm regulation.

Nine states plus D.C. currently ban some form of 'assault weapons,' including California, New York, Illinois, and Massachusetts.
