The facts

The Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on November 6, 2025 that Illinois' ban on semiautomatic weapons and large-capacity magazines does not violate the Second Amendment.

Illinois passed the Protect Illinois Communities Act in January 2023 following a July 4, 2022 mass shooting in Highland Park that killed seven and wounded dozens.

The federal assault weapons ban signed by President Clinton in 1994 expired in 2004 after Congress declined to renew it.

Ten states plus Washington, D.C. currently ban some form of assault-style weapons, including California, New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts.

In the 2022 Bruen decision, the Supreme Court ruled gun regulations must be consistent with the nation's 'historical tradition of firearm regulation.'
