The facts
The Pentagon announced on November 2025 that the military execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan will be livestreamed after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said it would be 'public.'
Hasan was convicted in 2013 by a military jury for killing 13 people and wounding more than 30 in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting.
The United States has not carried out a military execution since 1961, when Army Private John Bennett was hanged.
The last public execution in the U.S. was the 1936 hanging of Rainey Bethea in Owensboro, Kentucky, witnessed by an estimated 20,000 people.
Federal execution protocols currently limit witnesses to a small group including victims' families, media representatives, and government officials.
