Should the Feds Flood Polling Places With Election Monitors?

The facts

The Department of Justice plans to deploy roughly 1,000 monitors across all 50 states on Election Day 2026, according to Reuters.

That figure is about triple the number of federal monitors sent to the 2022 midterms.

The Justice Department says it would be the largest Election Day observation effort in the agency's history.

DOJ monitors operate under the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which authorizes federal observation of polling places to enforce federal voting law.

Several state officials, including in blue states, have signaled they may bar federal monitors from entering polling places under state law.
