The facts

FCC Chair Brendan Carr said on October 9, 2025 that he would defer to the Pentagon on whether networks can broadcast a planned December 3 military execution.

No US execution — civilian or military — has ever been broadcast on television.

The last US military execution was the 1961 hanging of Army Private John Bennett at Fort Leavenworth.

In 2001, Attorney General John Ashcroft rejected a legal push to televise the execution of Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh.

The military death row at Fort Leavenworth currently holds a small number of condemned service members, with no execution carried out since 1961.
