A city council in Zwickau, Germany voted in November 2025 to halt the installation of new Stolpersteine ('stumbling stones') memorial plaques for Holocaust victims.
The vote was carried by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) together with Friedrich Merz's center-right CDU and the Free Voters, according to the Associated Press.
Artist Gunter Demnig has installed more than 116,000 Stolpersteine across more than 30 countries since the project began in 1992, making it the world's largest decentralized memorial.
