The facts
The Election Assistance Commission was created by the Help America Vote Act of 2002 after the disputed 2000 election.
The EAC is a four-member bipartisan panel, with no more than two commissioners from the same political party.
In its 2024 ruling in Trump v. United States, the Supreme Court expanded presidential immunity and executive authority over federal officials.
The EAC sets voluntary voting-system guidelines used by states and distributes hundreds of millions in federal election security grants.
Commissioners are nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate to serve four-year terms.
